Dingzhou Kaiyuan Temple is renowned for its Northern Song Dynasty pagoda, a historic landmark and spiritual symbol of the ancient city of Dingzhou. Construction of the pagoda began in 1001 AD and was completed in 1055 AD, taking 55 years. At 83.7 meters tall with eleven stories, this octagonal pavilion-style brick-and-wood structure is the tallest surviving ancient brick pagoda in China, known as the “Number One Pagoda of China.” Below is a comparison of an old photo and a new one.

The new visitor center is sited in the area in front of the temple, at the intersection of the historic axis and the modern city. Therefore, the design strategy neither resorts to “antiquing” to imitate the past, nor pursues “novelty” for the sake of being different. Adopting an industrial modern aesthetic as its formal language while embracing the essence of traditional architectural spirit at its core, it seeks balance amidst tension and fosters dialogue through contrast. The architecture not only serves the functional needs of contemporary visitors but also humbly complements the primacy of the thousand-year-old pagoda.
